Baluxanduva Lwam is a 2019 Xhosa and English (translation) children’s book written by Ashia Nkontsa and published by Radio Zibonele FM in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. The extract on AfroStory is donated for younger children to teens yet has a lot to teach adults, too.
In the book, Ashia explains what some children have to go through in surrounding areas, on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa, where young children are often responsible for looking after multiple family members or even entire households – it is ‘normal’ so to speak, yet a daily reality many of us are aware of. Nkontse deals with this delicate subject-matter in a thoughtful and uplifting way, celebrating the bravery and humanity in a way that many children (and adults) in South Africa survive and even thrive. The Hero of the book is Zama, who is pictured in familiar township scenes acting out this truly African children’s story.
